Marshall Mcluhan y Norman Mailer hace 40 años

Encontré esta entrada de bavatuesdays (el blog que bautizó el edupunk) sobre una entrevista histórica del canal americano CBC del año 1968, donde Norman Mailer y Marshall MacLuhan discuten sobre tecnología

La entrevista es larga pero en el blog recogen algunas citas que voy a traducir mal:

McLuhan: “Whenever a new environment goes around an old one there is always terror. We live in a time when we have put a man-made satellite environment around the planet. The planet is no longer nature, it is no longer the natural world, it’s now the content of an artwork. Nature has ceased to exist…the environment is not visible, it’s electronic.

(‘Cada vez que un nuevo entorno surge, el viejo entorno entra en pánico. Vivimos tiempos donde tenemos entornos de satélites hechos por el hombre alrededor del planeta. El planeta no es más natural, no es más un mundo natural, es el contenido de una obra de arte. La naturaleza ha dejado de existir…el entorno no es visible, es electrónico’)

McLuhan: “Every age creates as an Utopian image a nostalgic rear-view mirror image of itself, which puts it thoroughly out of touch with the present. The present is the enemy. The present is the—and this will delight you Norman—the present is only faced in any generation by the artist. The artist is prepared to study the present as his material because it is the area of challenge to the whole sensory life, and therefore it is anti-Utopian, it is a world of anti-values. And the artist who comes into contact with the present produces an avant-garde image that is terrifying to his contemporaries.”

(‘Toda era crea una imagen utópica, una mirada restrospectiva nostálgica de sí mismo, que lo aleja del contacto con el presente. El presente es el enemigo. El presente- y esto te va a encantar Norman- el presente es enfrentado en cualquier generación por los artistas. El artista está preparado para estudiar el presente como su material porque es un área de desafío de toda la vida sensorial, y por lo tanto es anti-utópica, es un mundo de anti-valores. Y el artista que entra en contacto con el presente produce una imagen vanguardista que aterroriza a sus contemporáneos’)
